I Know What I Must Do

Sep18

When I first began this blog, I wrote out my short-term goals for the summer.  One of which was, of course, to lose some of the weight I gained while pregnant with Brady.  I'm sure I mentioned to you all that I failed in that area miserably.  That's okay, I've done pretty well on most of my other goals.  And I am taking baby steps here, right?

But then I watched a bit of The Biggest Loser last night on TV.  That's the show where people compete to lose the most weight in a given time period, for anyone who's not familiar with it.  I was shocked and scared by what I saw.  Contestants were given their biological age in comparison to their chronological age and actually shown some of the trouble spots of their anatomy compared to that of a healthy person.  They were given visual proof of their clogged arteries, over-burdened hearts, and impaired lungs.  It really hit home for me.

I know I eat terribly and exercise very little.  It's a vicous cycle, I know that as well.  It's a cycle I must admit I haven't worked very hard to break.  I think I've been so focused on and overwhelmed with everything involved in starting a new career that I've neglected my health.  Everyone knows food is used as an emotional crutch, and I'm sure I'm guilty of that, too.

However, just as I've taken baby steps to move closer to my other goals, I will do the same with this one.  First thing is to resist the vicous sweet tooth I possess.  I will not eat the Cocoa Puffs for breakfast or snack mindlessly on the M & M's (though the peanuts ones are the very best!)  The next step will be to purchase groceries that will allow me to avoid wheat and milk, which I'm allergic to.  It is possible; I've done it before.

A reader once asked me to share a dairy-free, wheat-free recipe.  I'll share my favorite banana muffin recipe with you next week to show you that there are foods out there I can eat, and that taste good.  My cooking bible is called The Gluten, Wheat, & Dairy Free Cookbook and contains lots of recipes that actually taste good and contain no wheat or milk.  Leave a comment if you know of any good recipes or advice for people with food allergies or would just like to encourage me and hold me accountable.  I could use all the help I can get!  Thanks.

I caught a bit of the Biggest Loser last night, too. Thought after watching Alli's amazing transformation (last season), I would be motivated to making the changes I need to....have not quite got it together yet! I know the struggle and the possibilities! Consider me a cheerleader for you to reach your goals. It is hard stuff but you can do it!!

Good start… Mary I could only support you emotionally because I m not good in cooking in particular with the request that you have. But I can give you more encouragement to be able to attain your goal. We can do it! It only needs to have a little baby step everyday (like what you have said). Good luck and persevere!

You can do it! I know, I'm an emotional and mindless eater, too. It is very hard to kick those habits, but once you do, it gets easier. I could never understand anorexic people, I just couldn't go without food for that long!

If I can do it, you can do it. I have lost about 25 pounds in 6 months and it all started because I went to a Dr appt and found out how high my cholesterol was, how hard my heart was working, my REAL HEALTH age (as opposed to chronological as you said) and it SCARED THE CRAP OUT OF ME. It scared me into getting a personal trainer and going on a serious diet.

I am still not all the way there, still have about 12-15 pounds to go to get to my goal weight but I already feel so much better about myself. Losing weight has done wonders for my self-esteem and confidence level. And I FEEL healthier.

Ill be thinkinig about you as you take this important journey!

Mary, I totally understand the weigh after having a baby. For some odd reason it is coming off rather quickly for me THIS time. Maybe its breast feeding and my diet changed dramatically 6 years ago. We are a 99.5% organic family. I don't buy sodas or much fruit juice at that. Kids drink milk, water, lemonade and the occasion sweet tea. There is rarely candy in house unless it has been a holiday. Mostly fresh veggies for us.
I couldn't make it without my dairy products. UGH!

I give you lots of support!!

Hang in there! You can totally do it! I'm right there with you - everytime I make progress I sneak in a "reward" and then, well... you know how it goes. But I'm not giving up (so that means you're not allowed to either). I'm with ya all the way!!

I love the biggest loser. It is such a motivating show and I am so impressed with what people can do on the show.
It really can't be easy with the food allergies. I know I put a lot of focuse in my diet with 100% whole grain and protien. A lot of my protien comes from dairy and of course the whole grains are wheat. I wish I could offer up something better for you. I wish you the best of luck!

I can only picture you tall and thin! hehehe. I did Weight Watchers and lost 35 lbs a few years ago. Of course, I had a wedding to motivate me. In any case... good luck. Don Mills Diva (link on my site) also has a cooking blog and about a month ago they were featuring many glutten free recipes.

Thanks for the bling, by the way. So sorry I haven't been able to get online much. My work is now using a blocking program for personal sites, and things get hectic at home!

I always feel so much more motivated after watching Biggest Loser!! But what really hit home for me was having some recent bloodwork done and learning that my cholesterol levels were super high and I'm already at the pre-diabetic stage!! And I'm only 39 yrs old!! I'm way too young to be dealing with these kinds of issues already! So with that, I've been watching what I eat and exercising at least 4-5 times a week.

Wishing the best of luck to you! You can do it!!!

I don't have any specific names but have used recipes from a lot of vegan cookbooks! You have so much energy when you eat fresh food and especially without dairy!

Maybe I need to start watching the Biggest Loser for some motivation! I know that you can do it and I am thinking about making changes myself. Perhaps we can help each other? What do you think about becoming fitness buddies? Let me know if you want to try it. I have found being accountable to someone else is great motivation.
