Something New: Vintage Thingies Thursday

Aug14

I found a new meme to take part in called Vintage Thingies Thursday. I first saw it at MommieDaze and thought it looked like fun.  You all know I'm usually thankful on Thursday, but I thought I'd mix it up a bit today!

The meme originated at Confessions of An Apron Queen.  You can go to her site to see her thingy of the week as well as others who are participating.  Let me know if you decide to play, too - I'd love to see what cool treasure you've got!

Here's mine.  It's a shaker for mixing alcoholic beverages.  I'd say it's probably from the '50's.  When I moved out on my own after my ex-husband and I separated, I had to get all new stuff, and I was on a serious budget.  I decided that I didn't want to go to Wal-Mart and buy all of the cookie-cutter housewares everyone else has, so I did my shopping at flea markets, thrift shops, and on eBay.  I found a woman nearby who sold all kinds of antiques on Ebay, so I bought this fun shaker along with lots of other stuff like china, pitchers, and a lamp, then met up with her to pick up my loot.  Here it is.  What do you think?  It lists recipes for drinks like Dry Martini, Manhattan, and Whiskey Sour.  Any idea how old it is?

By the way, the shaker is made of clear glass.  I put white tissue paper inside so you could see the printed recipes.  Isn't it cool?

That's great! Glad you put some tissue so we can see. I have no idea of how old it might be, but I know that was part of the suburban lifestyle in the 50's - dad came home and mom gave him a cocktail.

Welcome to VTT!

Very cool shaker. I like older vintage items like this. My friend has one of these and she keeps it in her kitchen and puts sweet n low packets in it, just sits it on the counter. It really looks cute since her kitchen is done in Pink. Love yours.

That is very cool. Hubby and I keep our eye out for some affordable 50's or earlier bar-ware.

Great little shaker...I'm pretty sure it's from the 50s era. I've just signed up and posted my first vintage thingies this week....however, I've just been to Lisa's site and my name's dropped off the list...I was at #26...not sure what's happened?? I've left her a msge and hope it all gets sorted. Can't wait to next Thursday....I'm loving all this vintage stuff, isn't it fun to see what others collect!!! Cheers, Marian xx

Thanks for joining in! Love the shaker. I could mix up a mean martini in it! I would also guess 1950s. Some of my favorite vintage items were acquired when we were broke & poor at the Goodwill or Salvation Army. My husband laughs at me sometimes & says- You know, you could have gotten a brand new one at the Wal Mart. We can afford it now.... I don't care. I'm hooked now & love digging through junk shops.

That shaker's very cool and original. It's kind of like those new sippy cups where your kid can draw a picture and then it can be inserted in the cup's liner; only this one's for adults!

Welcome!
These were used for Martinis, the old James Bond thingie, "shaken not stirred".
Crushed ice and then liquor, shake, and use a liquor strainer to pour and
keep the ice from falling into the martini. Definitely 1950's - early 1960's.
